How LifeStation works?

The medical alert equipment from LifeStation includes enhanced speakers, a system with voice capabilities, and a medical alarm button. The medical alarm button can be worn as a wristband or as a neck pendant. In the case of an emergency, the help button has to be pressed. This will generate a signal and activate the speaker and voice system. The system will connect to the monitoring center. One of the certified LifeStation care specialists at the center will communicate and enquire about the type of emergency and the type of assistance required. In case a senior is unable to speak, the specialist will follow a personalized emergency action plan. This plan specifies the order in which emergency contacts have to be communicated. The emergency contacts include emergency services, friends, and family. Additionally, the specialist will stay online until help arrives. The care specialists are available for assistance at any time.

Features at a glance

Waterproof buttons: The neck pendant and wristband have waterproof buttons. The devices can be worn in the pool, shower, as well as while taking a bath.

24/7 in-house monitoring: LifeStation offers 24/7 security through its in-house systems with just the push of a button. Whatever is the situation, LifeStation’s technical, supervisory, and operational staff are available any time you call them. The monitoring center follows both UL certification and TMA Five Diamond standards, which are high-level industry standards.

Self-testing every week: LifeStation systems conduct a self-test every week. There is no need to remember to check whether the systems are working optimally. In case of a power outage, the systems have 32 hours of standby power.

Loads of extra features available: Additional features include AlertMessage. It is a service through which LifeStation gets in touch with emergency contacts through email in the case of emergency or during self-testing of the system. Other features include LockBox, which gives emergency contacts access to a safe key to get into the home whenever there is an urgent need.

Additional buttons available: By paying an extra small monthly fee, additional help buttons can be requested. This can be for other family members who live under the same roof or for enhanced security in the bathroom or high-risk areas of the home.

Activation

There is no specific activation process involved with LifeStation. Only an order for the equipment has to be placed. The equipment will be delivered along with setup instructions. The base system has to be simply plugged into a phone jack (in case of landline option) and a wall outlet. The setup takes barely a few minutes. The necklace or bracelet is already synced. To test the system, just push the help button. Automatic weekly testing is also offered so that there is always an assurance that help is available whenever needed.

Tax deduction

The IRS doesn’t explicitly classify medical alert systems as tax-deductible. However, there are several options to get tax deductions on medical alarm systems.

Doctor’s prescription: Any medical equipment prescribed by a doctor can be tax-deductible. This is the general rule for medical expense deductions. So, if a doctor prescribes a medical alert system, it can be tax-deductible. However, medical alert systems are elective medical equipment, and hence, it might be difficult to get a prescription for the same.

Medical information: The IRS allows tax deductions for medical expenses that involve a plan that retains medical data in an electronic database and allows the retrieval of this data on request by a medical professional. Thus, medical alert system expenses can be tax-deductible since the provider stores medical profiles in the database and can furnish this information to EMTs and emergency providers on request.

Fall Detection

LifeStation has a proprietary sensor located inside the help button. In case of a fall due to any reason, the sensor will automatically detect it and determine that a fall has occurred. It will notify the monitoring center and request for help if needed. This is an add-on feature and incurs an extra charge.

Medicare or Medicaid coverage

Medicare covers multiple medical types of equipment that may be prescribed by a medical practitioner. However, medical alert systems are not covered by Medicare Part A as well as Part B. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage Part C may cover medical alert systems. Part C gives access to private HMOs and PPOs plans. Hence, the coverage will be comprehensive, and it will include equipment and services that are not included in Plan A or B.
